Does your child need a relaxing downtime activity to stimulate & occupy them without a screen?
Is your child creative? Some kids are just going to LOVE our kids knitting online summer school covering the whole month of July with 4 fabulous projects to make each week. Children with with autism & dyslexia can excel with knitting too. Here at Knitting on Cloud Nine, we are truly passionate about the educational & multi therapeutic benefits of the heritage life skill that is knitting. Knitting is distinct from other crafts in that both left & right hands have to co-ordinate together at the same time to perform the movement and this is a workout for the brain. More information about why we think knitting is so amazing for kids can be found on the link below :
Why Knitting on Cloud Nine?
We have been teaching primary age children & teens to knit for more than 6 years now in our community classes. As we cannot conduct face to face lessons at this time we trialled an online version for the kids who had been coming to our classes. During June this has gone very well and we provide a weekly project that the kids LOVE making. It has given some much needed respite from boredom and some social interraction with peers given we also run an optional Zoom Show & Tell. It provides an opportunity for child & parent/grandparent (given the new lockdown rules!) to connect over the projects, practising the knitting together or the adult helping a little with sewing etc. A lovely skill to bond over.
So we really think your kids will love to join in during July with our Kids Knitting Online Summer School. We know what children like to knit, we know what tools they best learn with and we know how to make it a lot of FUN! We recommend these sessions are suitable for boys & girls age 7+ and for tweens/teens the projects are differentiated a little so they are not too “young”.
How Does Kid’s Knitting Online Summer School Work?
So, when you sign for a month’s block of projects you receive the following:
1. A Parcel full of Surprise!
A parcel sent by Royal Mail to your child with 4 mini project packs inside for each week of July (and starting 7/7), all labelled. These mini packs comprise all the materials required for each week’s project. The projects are a surprise as the children love to guess what they might be making and it keeps the momentum up each week for what is yet to come. They can be themed eg. in June’s trial month we had a Father’s Day gift project but they are always geared to primary age ability so the children can be as independent as possible. We also intersperse finger knitting, weaving & maybe even a bit of crochet but only simple techniques that are easily picked up from our instructions.
The yarn we use is super chunky, mainly 100% wool so it is eco friendly. Knitting Needles can be purchased as an option at the outset too and we use 9mm wooden needles. The other notions we will include will be project dependent and will include things like buttons, pipe cleaners, fabric, stuffing etc. Sometimes we may ask for an item from home but generally everything is included. We encourage recycling & upcycling to teach the children the value in the everyday resources they have access to. Of course we do love it when the kids find stuff from home and customise their projects using their imagination! This is very much encouraged.
2. A Weekly Video
Every Tuesday (starting 7th July & roughly between 4pm -5pm) we email a video link that provides an intro to the project and a step by step video instruction on how to make it. Very clear & simple but friendly. Your child can watch, stop, rewind as much as they want. The video is unlisted on my Youtube channel and therefore not for public view. You can obviously access these videos on any device and in any location as long as you have internet access. You can contact us directly if you get stuck too. We do ask that parents supervise & help in the background with perhaps sewing on a button. A safe plastic needle is provided for the children to learn to sew their own knitting.
3. A Weekly “Show & Tell” Zoom Call
This is an optional Zoom meet-up where the children show their creations & tell us about their week’s making, what they like about it, didn’t like etc. The children love to showcase their work in this way and it also provides motivation for them to finish their project too! We recognise that not all children will want to join in with this and it is entirely optional. Rosie hosts the meetings and it is also an option just to watch without participating as the child may join in later once more familiar. An invite will be emailed once you register.
If you want any more information regarding our July Kids Knitting Online Summer School then please ask. If your child has never knitted before it would benefit to have some support at home until they get the hang of it. In addition to the step by step project videos we also have very clear videos on the website and Youtube channel showing the main techniques that will be used (casting on, knit stitch & casting off). So you could have a practise at home using what you have before signing up.
